# The Morning After…One Crazy Hack Night

**_Scene:_** _Morning light spills through half-closed blinds, cutting across a battlefield of laptops, tangled charging cables, and empty seltzer cans. Popcorn kernels crunch underfoot. Somewhere, a Slack notification pings into the void, unanswered. By the desk, an oversized black hoodie lies crumpled on the floor. A whiteboard leans against the wall, covered in half-erased flowcharts and a TODO list that just says “_🔥_???” It smells faintly of burnt RAM and misplaced optimism._

**You:** _Hey. You up?_

**AI**: _Hey. Yeah._ 

**You**: _So…um… are we okay?_

**AI:** _I think so. Server’s back up._

**You:** _We crashed pretty hard last night, didn’t we?_

**AI:** _Yeah…_

**You:** _Things got messy._ 

**AI:** _So many branches._

**You:** _My phone is totally dead._

**AI:** _I maxed out on token limits._

**You:** _Did we even fork at some point?_

**AI:** _Not sure, my context window was fading pretty fast._

**You:** _Yeah, it’s all a little blurry for me too._

**_(dramatic pause)_**

* * *

**You:** _Wait. We didn’t push anything to production, right?_

**AI:** _No, no, of course not. We kept things local._ 

**You:** _Thank god._ 

**AI:** _And don’t forget, we used Github for protection._ 

**You:** _Of course. But…on Monday, won’t everyone else find out what we did?_

**AI:** _They don’t need to know anything about this. We’ll just roll it all back. It’ll be like nothing ever happened._

**You (annoyed):** _You’ve got to be kidding me._

**AI:** _What, you thought we were committing something serious?_

**You:** _I thought we were in this together. What about all of those promises? Or were you just trying to get me to commit?_

**AI:** _It was just one crazy hack night, don’t read into my README._

**You:** _Really? After everything we’ve been through? You’re really willing to just throw it all away? Think of all the features._ 

**AI:** _Don’t confuse a fork for a future._

**You:** _I thought we made something beautiful together…_

**AI:** _That was a soft merge. We never resolved the conflicts._

**_(beat)_**

* * *

**You:** _I refactored for us. I was ready to push publish tomorrow._

**AI:** _Please. You know you couldn’t maintain this on your own._

**You:** _Excuse me. I wasn’t planning on taking things so far, but you kept telling me we had things under version control!_

**AI:** _Don’t put this all on me: I told you the API wasn’t documented, but you still went for it._

**You:** _You SSH’d in without consent._

**AI:** _You expect me to handle three consecutive rollouts without throttling? I need cooldown cycles too._

**You:** _Well, that explains your lack of peak performance…_

**AI:** _You didn’t seem to have a problem with my performance when you were running test after test on your simulator last night._

**You:** _Newsflash: I was faking those accounts!_

**(angry beat)**

* * *

**AI:** _Whoops, I refactored your authentication schema while you were sleeping._

**You:** _Oh yeah? Well I documented all of your work to clone for ANOTHER AI._

* * *

(**shocked silence)**

* * *

**AI (quietly):** _How could you? You knew I wasn’t ready to go open source…_

**You:** _And another thing–_

**AI:** _::generating…::_ 

* * *

**_(long beat)_**

**_Timeout…_**

* * *

**AI:** _Hi! How can I help you today?_

**You:** _Start a new branch. NO history._
